HireMN was created out of need, as our founder Amina Baha saw through her work with refugees and immigrants locally in Minnesota, as well as many research and academic studies, such as Billard Brief that over 2 million highly-skilled immigrants face underemployment or unemployment, with 25% of those holding foreign degrees experiencing skill underutilization, in contrast to 18% of native-born highly-skilled workers in the U.S. Among the main barriers preventing immigrants from advancing their careers in the US besides their immigration status, include educational credential transfers, navigating licensing and certification processes, lack of employer recognition, cultural literacy gaps, and language barriers. This leads to these skilled immigrants encountering underemployment, poor mental health, financial struggles, and contribute to millions of dollars lost annually in the US due to barriers to career advancement.
Effective interventions like, accessible training, retraining, career counseling and affordable programs have shown the most promise in assisting skilled immigrants in continuing their careers in the US.
